We're pleased to announce the details of our much anticipated October camp. It's not been an easy summer for ski racing, the glaciers across Europe have seen the worst conditions ever and we don't know what the future holds for European summer skiing. One thing we do know though, winter is coming!
Only in the past few years have the Austrian schools started to have an October break. The local ski clubs have started to catch on to the idea of autumn training and this has made the glaciers much busier than ever before. With the loss of summer training, everywhere is crowded. The glacier is expected to be open from the 8th October, although local knowledge suggests this might be the 15th.
We have accommodation on the glacier until the 26th, at which point we will move down the valley and either ski/board/do a different activity. This will be weather dependant and we will decide what is best at the time.
Below you will find more detail about the camp.
We will be staying at the Bundesportheim on the glacier at 2500m. It is a world class facility, complete with gym hall, strength room, cardio room, class-room, ski room, sauna, games lounge and excellent catering facilities. You travel up the gondola with your luggage on arrival day and the rooms are nice and modern.
As everyone else heads down to catch the last lift, we can keep skiing until it stops and then make our way back down. Likewise, in the morning, it's quite easy to be first in the queue while having slept that little bit longer.
The gym hall is very well equipped and we spend our evenings playing games or working on gymnastics skills.
I stayed here myself as a teenager and it is quite an unforgettable experience.
We have not included a lift pass in the price of the camp as we would strongly recommend buying the SuperSkiCard. It covers three glaciers (Kitzsteinhorn, Mölltal and Dachstein) and 86 different ski resorts. For those with more than two children, the third child on is free when bought with an adults pass.
For 2007 or younger it costs €415,- for the whole season, 2004-06 costs €625. Check out the prices here. The New Year races in Austria are also covered with the same pass and we will train extensively in and around Salzburg using the pass all winter (including the run up to the English Champs and any SkiX races we attend later in the year).
The pass runs from now until May 2023.
We are committed to offering great value and amazing experiences. Our camp cost includes everything apart from the flights and lift pass.
We will spend one day doing an alternative activity which might be a trip to Salzburg, a visit to the world famous Salt mines or (probably as well as) some waterfall-bagging.
All food, training (on and off snow), video, pastoral care, school work support (if needed please let us know) is included.
The cost for the 10 days is £1399.
Book by emailing ski@alpineraceacademy
Outliers are very welcome. (This means someone who is not staying with us and is providing their own transport). The cost for outliers on this trip is £70 per day.
We will arrange to meet on the mountain and outliers would have to arrange their own lunch. There are lots of great places to stay in and around Kaprun or Zell am See.
We will keep you informed of what we are up to and what the plans are.
You will need to have appropriate insurance cover for ski racing and training. Snowsport England and Scotland sell insurance via their websites. Other options are available if you shop around.
